Happy Birthday, Sho! / "Arashi Ni Manabu" book, page 56~57

Happy 35th Birthday, Sakurai Sho!

Recently, I picked up a book printed in 2015, called "Learning from Arashi : 100 Hints to Becoming More Positive". To be honest, I am usually a negative thinker, but being negative has gotten me nowhere. So with a new job, moving to a new home with my husband, and all of these fresh starts, I figured why not read a book about how to be a better person, and this self-help book features Arashi!

To celebrate Sho's birthday and to get started on thinking about life in a more positive light, I have translated the first hint in Sho's section. Basically, what I get from it is that serving others and being kind can bring its own positivity. Sho doesn't forget where he has come from as a person, and that he takes care of the people around him. Seems so sweet. I need to do more of that myself. Anyway, here is the snippet:

The Importance of Beginnings

“There are things to learn from our debut for everyone, including ourselves. I think about the importance of “beginnings” each month, and as I push my career forward with care, I can feel the importance of us 5 and our origin." -- Sakurai Sho

As the range of work widens, the more active someone is, the more a talent will usually overestimate their power over others. But in Arashi, Sakurai Sho has no such worry. What he cherishes more than anything, is kindness and learning from everyone, even those who are “merely beginners”.

“Even though I am new to the company, I had the opportunity to have a meal with Sakurai kun and other Fuji TV staff recently. He had such a humble attitude and he sat up straight the entire time. I was worried about looking bigger than him, so I sat scrunched down a bit in my seat.

'The common sense of the Gokai Flow* applies strongly to Sakurai kun. Not only did he arrive earlier than the staff at the appointed time, he ordered meals and drinks, he made sure to prepare and help serve our food. His reasoning was “I am the youngest one here” so he thought it was important we felt welcomed by him, even me, regardless of my low position in the company.

'Typically, if you were in the entertainment industry for at least 15 years, you would have staff prepare meals and coffee for you at the meeting, and you normally would just be seated at the table. But I am grateful for his kindness, and it seems so natural to him to serve others. There are things that have not changed about him since debut.

'Of course it is a special kind of existence, being a super-selling idol. Arashi exists because they all maintain their initial intentions as a group. Sakurai tends to forget his status at times because of his consideration of others. It has taught me important things.”

*Note: In Reiki, the Gokai gives simple advice on how to carry oneself. Translated to English, here are some of the points that the staff might be referring to-- Work Diligently, Be Thankful, Be Kind to Others.
