The Television Monthly 3.27-4.30 Spring Drama Talk Special: Matsumoto Jun “99.9″

“Hana Yori Dango” Actor Breaks New Ground

“99.9: Criminal Lawyer” will be a Sunday Drama. In his first lawyer role, Miyama Daisho (Matsumoto Jun) will be doing the 99.9% possible in a criminal case where there is only 0.1% chance an outcome will be reached.

It will be a challenge but also a pleasure to play this role. We had a lawyer supervising me so I was happy that he could keep my character on the ground, and that the studio could offer me this. May of my senpai are working together on this project (including producer Setoguchi) and the script has such range that hopefully I played this character well. (laughs) I was also surprised by this haircut, as it looks a bit youthful. (laughs) It fits the image of law offices being so clean-cut. Even the conversational tone of a young lawyer I had to consult the real lawyer on. (laughs) I even considered Miyama’s tailored suit; it’s well-made and strong, so Miyama might be a bit luxurious. Though that was the decision of the staff and stylists.

Did you study the court system at all?

Sure! I read some documents, but I wanted to be sure the plot was easy for the audience to follow. Anything I didn’t understand needed to be explained in the drama for the audience. Say, when we “solve” a case, it has to be clear. The co-stars and the staff have to think about this when filming.

And in this newly-made series, it was assumed you would star. The character was written with you in mind, right?

While reading the script, it became obvious. The writers certainly didn’t keep this a secret. (laughs) I don’t want to admit it, but their memory of me is written into the character a little bit. Sometimes I realize it and I begin to become aware of how I am a part of Miyama and Miyama is essentially me as a lawyer. There is something a bit “Jun” about him without it reaching the character’s surface. Fans in the audience might be able to see the connection.

So this time you could find a connection to [your persona]?

Yes, although Miyama is more aloof and unconventional, even for a lawyer. But he is serious and full of commitment too, at least that’s my impression. It might be best to say he’s “elusive”. The producer, Setoguchi, worked with Arashi during their debut and with me on “Hana Yori Dango” and “Smile”, so the staff knows me quite well, though it’s been seven years since we worked together. I enjoy working with this group, so I hope everyone looks forward to my Sunday drama, turning over a new leaf each week. I hope it is a drama people associate me with long into the future. I am feeling optimistic about it!
